The pier was built of local sandstone to provide work and encourage fishing during the Great Famine. Unusually, the stone was mined under-ground rather than qurried. horses pulled loads to the railhead or to awaiting steamers.
Mountcharles was orginally called Tamhnach an tSalainn, meaning the “Field of Salt” and dates back to the 1700s.
The Sore walk offers exquisite panoramic views of the bay, the blue Stacks and Barnesmore Gap to the North east and to the Sligo mountains and Benbulbin to the South west.
